Hernia Surgery and Hernia Repair

Hernia Surgery

If you have a bulging abdomen and lingering pain through in the same area, then you may possibly have a hernia. There are several types of hernias but most of the time hernias form in the abdomen area of the body.

The vast majority of people do not care to have hernia surgery, which is obviously the wrong way to go as a hernia can cause serious medial complications and even death. If you procrastinate, there will be more pain giving you a more difficult time when you do finally decide to go for hernia surgery.

Types of hernia -

Listed below are the different types of hernias -

  • Cooper’s hernia – a femoral hernia that forms with two hernia sacs, the first hernia sac forming in the femoral canal, the second hernia sac forms by passing through a weak spot in the superficial fascia tissue and muscles while appearing almost immediately underneath the skin where the hernia is located.
  • Epigastric hernia – This type of hernia is a hernia that forms through the linea alba above the umbilicus region.
  • Hiatal hernia – a hiatal hernia is commonly derived from a “short esophagus” – insufficient elongation of the espohagus causes the stomach to be displaced into the thorax region.
  • Littre’s hernia – is a type of hernia involving a Meckel’s diverticulum.
  • Lumbar hernia – a hernia in the lumbar region (not to be confused with a lumbar disc hernia), contains the following entities:
    • Petit’s hernia: a hernia through Petit’s triangle (inferior lumbar triangle).
    • Grynfeltt’s hernia: a hernia through Grynfeltt-Lesshaft triangle
  • Maydl hernia – Is a type of hernia that forms with two adjacent loops of small intestine wrapped inside of a hernia sac.
  • Obturator hernia- A type of hernia that forms through obturator canal
  • Pantaloon hernia – This type of hernia is a culmination of a direct and indirect hernia. This type of hernia can best be described when the hernial sac protrudes and forms on both sides of the inferior epigastric vessels, which causes a type of saddle bag effect. A.K.A – saddle bag hernia
  • Paraesophageal hernia -
  • Paraumbilical hernia – This type of hernia forms an umbilical hernia , this type of hernia most frequently form in adults
  • Perineal hernia – This type of hernia protrudes through the muscles , tissues, and fascia of the perineal floor region. This type of hernia commonly forms after specific gastric and bowel surgeries.
  • Properitoneal hernia – This type of hernia commonly forms directly above the peritoneum region.
  • Richter’s hernia – This type of hernia involves only one sidewall of a persons bowels . This hernia often can strangle a persons bowels causing serious health complications.
  • Sliding hernia – This type of hernia occurs when an organ drags along part of the hernia sac. The two most commonly affected organs with this type of hernia are the colon and the urinary bladder.
  • Sciatic hernia – this type of hernia typically forms in the greater sciatic foramen region and most commonly occurs as an uncomfortable spot in the gluteal region. This type of hernia can sometimes cause sciatic neuralgia and can also block a persons bowels.
  • Spigelian hernia- A.K.A. lateral ventral hernia
  • Sports hernia – When a hernia is described by chronic groin pain usually caused by a dilated ring of the inguinal canal.
  • Velpeau hernia – When a hernia forms in the groin region, typically in front of the femoral blood vessels in that area.
  • Amyand’s Hernia- When a hernia containing the appendix vermiformis
  • Busse’s Hernia – When a testicle resides within the hernia sac

What is a Hernia

A hernia is an opening or weakness in the muscular structure of the wall of the abdomen. This abdominal wall hernia causes a bulging of the abdominal wall. This abdominal wall bulging is typically more noticeable when the abdominal muscles are contracted, thus increasing the pressure on the abdominal hernia in the abdominal region.

In most circumstances, hernias develop in the abdomen, this happens when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a localized hole, or “defect”, through which adipose tissue, or abdominal organs covered with peritoneum, may protrude. Another common hernia symptom that is perhaps the most agonizing is when the hernia bulges into a persons spinal column and spinal discs ,which in turn, causes sciatica.

As with most major health problems of the body, it is highly advisable to repair hernias as fast as possible to prevent further health complications such as major organ dysfunction and possible shutdown, internal gangrene, and possibly multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

Hernia Repair

Most abdominal hernias can be repaired with corrective hernia surgery techniques and the hernia recovery process typically requires long-term changes in lifestyle and work habits. Uncomplicated hernias are principally repaired by pushing back, or “reducing”, the herniated abdominal defect.

Hernia Surgery Recovery -

After a hernia surgery , a person will experience discomfort and pain in the immediate surgery area. Due to this, post op hernia surgery patients are highly recommended to stay sedentary for the first 3-5 days after surgery.

Here are some helpful post op hernia surgery tips-

  1. Most people are the most comfortable sitting up while healing from hernia surgery. While lying down can sometimes be comfortable, the downside is the pressure that is put on the post-surgery affected area trying to get up from lying down. Be careful !
  2. The immediate healing process should be sedentary, after the initial 3-5 days of healing a patient should start slowly moving and walking around. This helps to strengthen muscles that have been affected by the hernia surgery and will help speed up the hernia surgery recovery process.
  3. Take all post op medications as prescribed by your doctor
  4. Eating regularly after hernia surgery is also recommended as this helps to keep your bowels loose and helps prevent further strain when going to the bathroom.
  5. Recovering from hernia surgery can sometimes take months, depending on the specific individual and how well they follow post op hernia surgery procedures. After the initial pain from the hernia surgery incision has subsided, a post op patient needs t be fully aware that there body is still healing internally.
  6. Pay attention to your body ! If you are experiencing chronic post op pains and/or oozing of the incision after the hernia surgery, please contact your hernia doctor immediately.
